In this studio, we explored systems thinking by shifting between macro structures and micro details of our environments. Zooming out revealed large systemic patterns, while zooming in showed how interconnected elements directly shape human experiences. Using lenses such as economy, culture, sustainability, society, technology, and policy, we analyzed environments not as isolated parts but as layered, interdependent networks. A key takeaway was how this perspective supports better design decisions that balance people, planet, and profit. In service system design, it enabled us to see ecosystems as a whole while still focusing on detailed user interactions. Field visits reinforced these ideas. At IKEA and MG Road, we examined why consumers often prefer branded goods over local ones, uncovering systems of trust, quality, and perception. The Anatomy of AI case study further revealed the hidden labor, extraction, and supply chains behind digital systems. We also practiced mapping tools system maps, mind maps, and affinity maps to plot actors, stakeholders, and power dynamics. These exercises highlighted how influence, perception, and dependencies operate within systems. Overall, the studio provided a framework to understand complexity, connect macro contexts with micro realities, and approach design with greater criticality and responsibility.
